UEFA Europa League: Match Analysis, Probabilities and Statistics

The UEFA Europa League is Europe’s second-tier club competition, sitting below the Champions League and above the Conference League. The 2026-27 edition is the 56th in its history, and the third played with a 36-club league phase. This page explains that format, gives some general statistics from 2025-26 and describes how Prediction AI analyses a Europa League match. It deliberately contains no table or fixture list: that data changes every matchday, so check uefa.com.
Competition format, 2026-27 season
- Clubs: 36 clubs contest the league phase. The list published by UEFA (provisional at the time) includes three English clubs (Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Sunderland), three French (Lyon, Marseille, Rennes), two German (Hoffenheim, Leverkusen), two Italian (Milan, Juventus) and two Spanish (Real Sociedad, Celta). Olympiacos and OFI Crete represent Greece, Omonia represent Cyprus, and Jagiellonia and Lech Poznań represent Poland. Aston Villa, the 2025-26 winners, are not defending the trophy: the English club are playing in the Champions League.
- League phase: all 36 clubs sit in a single table. Each plays eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away. Clubs are split into four pots of nine according to their coefficient and face two teams from every pot, one at home and one away. Clubs from the same country do not meet, and a club faces no more than two opponents from any one other country. This phase runs from mid-September 2026 to 28 January 2027, usually on Thursdays.
- Qualification: the top eight go straight into the round of 16. Clubs finishing 9th to 24th contest two-legged knockout play-offs in February 2027. Clubs finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated, with no route into another European competition.
- Knockout stage: the round of 16 in March, the quarter-finals in April and the semi-finals in late April and early May 2027, all over two legs. The one-off final is scheduled for Wednesday 26 May 2027 at the Frankfurt stadium (Waldstadion) in Germany.

General statistics from the 2025-26 season
In 2025-26 the Europa League produced 512 goals across the whole competition, from the league phase to the final, an average of 2.71 goals per match according to UEFA. That is clearly lower than the Champions League over the same season (3.47). Igor Jesus (Nottingham Forest) and Petar Stanić (Ludogorets) finished as joint top scorers with seven goals each. In the final, played in Istanbul on 20 May 2026, Aston Villa beat SC Freiburg 3-0.
The league phase featured 144 matches and 386 goals (2.68 per match). Home sides won 76 times (53%), against 25 draws (17%) and 43 away wins (30%). Home advantage was therefore stronger than in the Champions League that season. One season is not enough to establish a trend, so these benchmarks need to be confirmed over time.

What makes these matches distinctive to analyse
The Europa League brings together clubs with very different profiles: in 2025-26, 23 national associations were represented in the league phase. The standard of domestic leagues is not directly comparable. A team’s recent form therefore has to be read alongside the quality of the opponents it has faced.
Matches are played on Thursdays, sandwiched by league fixtures and often after long journeys. For some clubs the competition is a priority; for others the league comes first and the squad is rotated more. In the knockout rounds, what a second leg means depends on the first-leg score.
How Prediction AI analyses a Europa League match
The analysis works in two steps: a web search first gathers the verifiable facts about the match, then the artificial intelligence estimates the probabilities from that file of facts. For a European match, it covers:
- Recent form: each side’s last five competitive matches in all competitions, with goals scored and conceded per match, clean sheets and matches in which both teams scored.
- Context: each club’s position in its domestic league, its key absences and the facts around the match itself (what is riding on it, the matchday, a congested schedule).
- Head-to-head record: the most recent meetings of the two clubs, which are often rare for teams from different countries.
- Key players and referee: goals, assists and availability of the most decisive players; the referee’s average cards and penalties once appointed, otherwise “not yet appointed”, with no invented statistics.
- Probabilities: 1X2, over or under 2.5 goals, both teams to score, the most likely scoreline, likely scorers and the probability of more than 4.5 cards.
- Three forecasts: from the most cautious to the boldest, each with its probability, together with a data-quality rating and the assumptions made where information is missing.
When information on a less high-profile club is scarce, the data-quality rating drops and the assumptions made are spelled out: that is a signal worth taking into account. To interpret the figures properly, read our guide how to read 1X2 probabilities. These probabilities remain uncertain estimates: a favourite can lose and a model can be wrong.
