Bundesliga: Match Analysis, Probabilities and Statistics

Floodlit football stadium before kick-off

The Bundesliga is the top tier of German professional football, and 2026-27 is its 64th season. This page explains its format, gives some general statistics from 2025-26 and shows how Prediction AI analyses a Bundesliga match. It deliberately contains no table or fixture list: that data changes every matchday, so check the official sources, starting with bundesliga.com.

Competition format, 2026-27 season

  • Clubs: 18 clubs, made up of 15 that stayed up and 3 promoted from 2. Bundesliga: Schalke 04, second-tier champions, SV Elversberg, playing in the top flight for the first time, and SC Paderborn, who won the play-off against Wolfsburg. Bayern Munich are the holders.
  • Matchdays: each club plays the other 17 at home and away, which makes 34 matchdays and 306 matches. The season runs from 28 August 2026 to late May 2027, with a winter break after matchday 14 (play resumes on 8 January 2027) and one midweek round in early March 2027.
  • Relegation: the bottom two go straight down to 2. Bundesliga. The club in 16th plays a two-legged play-off against a 2. Bundesliga side in late May and early June 2027. In 2025-26 Heidenheim and St. Pauli went down automatically, and Wolfsburg via the play-off.
  • European places: the top places lead to the Champions League; in 2026-27 the previous season’s top four (Bayern, Dortmund, Leipzig, Stuttgart) are in its league phase. Fifth place goes into the Europa League league phase and sixth into the Conference League play-offs. The German Cup (DFB-Pokal) winners earn a Europa League place; if they have already qualified through the league, the place passes to the next club in the table.
  • Tie-breakers: clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head results.

The number of European places depends on Germany’s UEFA coefficient and on the cup, so always check the official sources for the current season.

General statistics from the 2025-26 season

In 2025-26 the Bundesliga produced 990 goals in 306 matches, an average of 3.24 goals per match, against 2.75 in the Premier League over the same season. Bayern Munich won their 34th Bundesliga title with 89 points, sixteen more than Borussia Dortmund, and wrapped it up on 19 April 2026 with four matchdays to spare. They scored 122 goals, a single-season Bundesliga record (the previous mark, 101, dated from 1971-72). Harry Kane finished as top scorer with 36 goals, for the third season running.

Across the season, 134 of 306 matches (43.8%) ended in a home win, 75 (24.5%) in a draw and 97 (31.7%) in an away win. Home advantage is real, but close to one match in three was won by the visitors. That is a league-wide average, and the effect varies from one ground and one club to the next.

What makes these matches distinctive to analyse

The league’s goals average needs to be read with care. Bayern alone scored 122 of the season’s 990 goals, 3.59 per match, while St. Pauli managed only 29 in 34 matchdays. A high overall average says little about a match involving two bottom-half sides: what counts is the record of the two clubs actually playing.

The fixture load matters too. Six German clubs are in a European league phase in 2026-27: four in the Champions League and two in the Europa League (Hoffenheim and Leverkusen). Add the German Cup and squad rotation and fatigue follow, two factors to check before each analysis rather than assume. Finally, the three promoted clubs are new to, or returning to, the top flight: their second-tier results do not carry straight over to the Bundesliga.

How Prediction AI analyses a Bundesliga match

The analysis works in two steps. First, a web search gathers the verifiable facts about the match: date, ground, which side is at home, recent results, league position and absences. Then the artificial intelligence estimates the probabilities from that file of facts. For every match, the analysis covers:

  • Recent form: each side’s last five competitive matches in all competitions, with goals scored and conceded per match, clean sheets and matches in which both teams scored.
  • League position and absences: where each club stands and which key players are injured or suspended.
  • Head-to-head record: the most recent meetings of the two sides, put in context.
  • Key players and referee: goals, assists and availability of the most decisive players; the referee’s average cards and penalties once appointed, otherwise “not yet appointed”, with no invented statistics.
  • Probabilities: home win, draw and away win (1X2), over or under 2.5 goals, both teams to score, the most likely scoreline, likely scorers and the probability of more than 4.5 cards.
  • Three forecasts: from the most cautious to the boldest, each with its probability, together with a data-quality rating and the assumptions made where information is missing.

These probabilities are uncertain estimates: a favourite can lose and a model can be wrong. To interpret them properly, read our guide how to read 1X2 probabilities. They help you read a match; they do not replace the context or your own judgement.

FAQ: three factual questions

In 2026-27 the Bundesliga has 18 clubs and 34 matchdays (306 matches), with every club playing the other 17 home and away.

How many clubs are relegated from the Bundesliga?

Two go down automatically, the clubs finishing 17th and 18th. The club in 16th plays a two-legged play-off against a 2. Bundesliga side: in 2025-26 Wolfsburg lost it to SC Paderborn (0-0 in the first leg, then a 2-1 defeat after extra time in the second).

How many goals per match are scored in the Bundesliga?

In 2025-26 the average was 3.24 goals per match (990 goals in 306 matches). It changes from one season to the next.
